Denim Shag Rug Workshop: Textile, Texture & Creative Reuse

A hands-on textile workshop transforming reclaimed denim into a richly textured rug through repetitive handwork and creative reuse.

Using strips of reclaimed denim and an open-grid rug backing, participants build the rug surface gradually, working one strip at a time until the backing is transformed into a dense, tactile textile.

The process is simple to learn, but visually rich. Variations in denim color, wash, fraying, and placement create depth and movement, allowing each rug to develop its own character.

This workshop explores more than construction. It introduces participants to repetition, texture, material transformation, tonal composition, and the creative possibilities of working with what already exists.

FROM SAMPLE TO FINISHED RUG

The finished rugs shown here measure 24" × 36" and take about five hours of handwork to complete.

For shorter workshops, participants work on a 12" × 12" textile sample using the same technique. The smaller format allows participants to learn the process, experiment with denim color and texture, and see how the surface develops through repetition.

Once the technique is learned, it can be continued and adapted to create a full-size rug.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to prepare and work with reclaimed denim strips
  • How to build a dense shag surface using an open-grid rug backing
  • How repetition and placement affect texture and density
  • How different denim washes and tones create visual variation
  • How to work intuitively with color, texture, and material
  • How discarded clothing can be transformed into a functional textile object

DESIGN WITH WHAT REMAINS

Denim is particularly suited to this process because no two pieces age in quite the same way. Fading, wear, seams, washes, and variations in color become part of the finished surface.

Rather than disguising those differences, the technique celebrates them.

What might otherwise be discarded becomes the raw material for a completely new textile, one built through handwork, repetition, and time.

A Place to Stand

There is something meaningful about creating an object slowly with your hands, one small action at a time.

A rug is also an unusually grounded object. It supports us physically. We stand on it, walk across it, and live with it.

For this reason, the workshop can also be adapted for veterans’ groups, recovery programs, community organizations, and other settings where a repetitive, tactile creative process can provide a quiet and focused handcraft experience.

At the end of the process, something worn and discarded has been transformed into something useful, substantial, and new:

A place to stand on your own two feet.

BRING THIS WORKSHOP TO YOUR COMMUNITY

The Denim Shag Rug Workshop can be presented for schools, colleges, community organizations, veterans’ groups, creative groups, private gatherings, and special events.

Workshop format and project size can be adapted to the group, setting, and time available. Shorter workshops can focus on creating a 12" × 12" textile sample, while longer or multi-session programs can allow participants to explore the technique more extensively.
