Denim Appliqué Workshop: Design in Miniature.

A hands-on fashion design and embellishment workshop

Learn the handcraft techniques behind embellished denim while creating your own miniature fashion collection.

Using my original miniature fashion patterns, you'll work with denim, leather, trims, rhinestones, ball chain, sequins, and other embellishments while learning cutting, placement, layering, composition, and finishing techniques.

All materials and tools are provided. No experience necessary.

 

Practice Small. Design Big.

I originally developed this exercise in my design studio as a way to teach interns how to cut appliqués accurately, work with detail, and develop their design skills without practicing on valuable materials.

The miniature project is a training exercise disguised as a creative project.

While you're making a small fashion collection, you're actually developing the hand control, precision, design judgment, and attention to detail needed for larger appliqué and embellishment work.

After creating thousands of appliqués throughout my career, I've developed ways of cutting and working quickly and precisely. I'll show you how I approach small shapes, curves, placement, layering, composition, and finishing—and how seemingly small details can change the quality of a finished design.

From Practice to Design

Working in miniature gives you the freedom to experiment with materials and ideas while training both your hand and your eye.

At this scale, every detail matters—a curve, an edge, the placement of a rhinestone, the relationship between materials. You begin to see how small design decisions affect the whole. And those are the same skills you can take into larger appliqué and embellishment projects.

Everything Is Provided

Just bring yourself.

I'll provide my original miniature fashion patterns, denim and fabric remnants, leather, trims, rhinestones, sequins, chain and other embellishments, along with scissors, adhesives, paper, card stock, and the tools you'll need to create your collection.

Design With What Remains

Creative reuse is also part of the process. Materials left over from one project can become the starting point for something completely different.

These miniature fashion artworks were created from leftover fabric from one of my handbag design projects and embellished with leather details and coral chips.
